Despite the many attempts of giving dignity to the woman especially in a religious environment, most of the times she has been submitted to man in some religions as well as in new religious movements.

Witchcraft is beyond any doubt the movement that more than others tries to honour the female peculiarity and in fact it is still thought to belong to women.

Witchcraft not only hasn’t disappeared, but it is still alive and enjoys a period of great spreading thanks to films, books, comics that highlight its fascination and the power of those that practice it.

Modern witches have retaken possession of ancient magic textbooks, they use them and hand them down one to another in an initiation chain that includes almost only women.

In Middle Ages it wasn’t really witchcraft to be condemned but rather femininity because it was felt as an obscure and dangerous side of human genre. It is useless to remember that the period was practically a prerogative of men and women were submitted to them and confined to a secondary role.

Male supremacy started to crack when “The females of human genre” began to feel something of their own: they would meet together for talking, laughing or confiding. After the first female gathering new congregations came to life. Men looked at this new situation with concern, as a  danger to look out. Even nowadays some tribal societies or religious cultures still ruled only by men consider “witches” those women that try to meet each other or want to show their love for life, and often condemn and kill them.

If we take for example, some of the classical textbooks of the Inquisition like the Cautio criminalis or the Malleus maleficarum, we can notice that sure signs of witchcraft and devil possession were those traits typical of the feminine experience: being together and entrusting secrets one another, speaking about sexuality, joking and laughing together. Even though women gathered at the sunset, when all the activities were practically finished and after the farming and household jobs were done, men still couldn’t stand the desertion of the dinner-table and house-life.

The male world was scared and annoyed by the gathering of women and feared that they could throw out the constituted order: thus starting out a war to femininity. Many women suffered unjustly; some were also executed for having fluttered the flag of the primitive feminist movement.

We mention this historical period because modern witches think to have a right of revenge against the obscurantism and through witchcraft they are still trying to revalue the female figure.

We’ll see later on that if witchcraft in the year 1000 was truly the premonitory sign of the coming feminist movement, today it is something different.

Neo Witchcraft moves from the end of 1800 when a non-well identified Magdalene during an ecstatic moment apparently received a manuscript which she called Aradia, also known as the Gospel of the Witches, later published in 1899.

According to this textbook Diana is represented as the queen of witches. She has a “brother” Lucifer, who is generated from her own substance. From their union a daughter was born, Aradia, whose mission would have been to teach all the women the true sorcery and through it deliver them from man’s yoke and the human genre from his oppressors.

Most of today’s witchcraft goes back to this textbook and follows it literally : dancing naked on fields from sunset to sunrise, singing hymns to mother nature and ancient gods, especially Lucifer that is believed to be a seeker of light and an emanation of the goddess mother Diana.

A further step towards the study of witchcraft and the compiling of rituals arrives at the beginning of the XX century from the famous Egyptologist Alice Murray, who gave to print a writing that would become a textbook: the god of the witches. The witches (in her theories the term includes wizards too) had to gather in groups of twelve with the leader who, in the official ceremonies, was to impersonate the god with its horns. She also made a revision of the witchery rituals calendar.

Another contribution to the development of modern witchcraft movement was done by Gerald Gardner that took his steps from the initiation degrees of Masonry and from the sexual magic of Crowley. In the first two degrees the initiated Masons of Gardner can dance and sing naked in a circle and are also allowed to practice a small scourging that should stimulate clairvoyance. In the third degree it is taught a kind of sexual magic that can be used especially during the “great rituals” in the Sabbath days when the wizard and the witch (who impersonate the god with the horns and the goddess) couple in a sexual act to generate and make the power on earth alive.

In this short excursus we have seen that although some of the witchery texts descend from ancient cults and civilisations , the Neo Witchcraft movement hasn’t got ancient origins.

Witches believe to be the only ones who are able to celebrate the authentic witchcraft and through it experience the joy of life, the balance and respect of nature, the rhythm of seasons, the vitality and freedom of sex. In their ideology any defiance against this moral code should be punished in a harsh and unforgettable way.

Their calendar includes a great number of meetings and festivals, in coincidence of solar lunar and seasonal cycles, that can be divided according to its solemnity in festivals, compulsory and optional memorials, holidays.

After the new witches are selected they have to be prepared through an initiation that infuse an occultist knowledge which is able to make every magic process incomprehensible to the beginner or to anyone who doesn’t know all.

Finally even though it may look weird, witchcraft imply a hard ascetic path stressed by prayer. It is difficult to explain what is prayer for a witch since each one of them feels godliness in her own individuality and appeals to it as it suits her best.

It is good to remember that witchcraft is polytheistic and pagan and therefore each natural phenomenon and each god takes on a role and a specific name that has to be invoked in a way that is consistent with his dignity and appearance; each god has his own rites, gestures and prayers that can also change depending on the place where prayer is recited.

The prayer has to be said in a temple and the witchery temple is mainly the body, with his mind and instinct, that says the prayer and this is the reason why communal celebrations are always done in the open, close by water and air, symbols of individual freedom.

Neo-witchcraft is mostly an alternative religion that considers godliness as part of oneself and a celebration of nature. It doesn’t have a concept of good and evil and of sin because witchcraft doesn’t prescribe any kind of confession and the witch organizes her own internal balance as she wishes. In fact what it may be right for her may be wrong for someone else.

With such an outline witchcraft may be seen as an Eden where woman is like a queen and an absolute master. Nevertheless this is not the case. Woman has to subject herself to man even in this cult especially in the sexual experience with the excuse that she draws life and strength from his seed. In addition to that, most of the witchery congregations are submitted to several initiated and magic orders whose leaders are always men that direct women’s works and they often submit them to their sexual desires taking the excuse that sex is needed for initiation. Submission to sex is always the reason for the introduction of women in some alternative religious movement.

We have news about some organisations that gather around a seer or a charismatic person where the leader is a woman: she becomes a reference point and the other women belonging to the same congregation have to serve her and attract men to join the group or they are asked to care for the children during meeting times. Even in such a case the woman is exploited for what she may give to the leader (man or woman) and the group.

Some extreme groups have turned women into slaves, making them not only servants of the leader-master and the group but also locking them inside cells, or punishing them for the fact of being women or for experiencing feelings.

An example of this practice is the Community of Saint Anthony Abbot in Italy headed by Gabriel Basmadji, an Iraqi who has founded several communes where many young girls, some of whom were also well educated, were confused by his preaching on the devil and reduced to slavery after joining his group. Naturally he promised he would help them to be free from the devil who was afflicting them. After shaving their heads they were locked in cages or tied to beds for days, forced to roll in their excrements, or hit until bleeding, starved and submitted to the leader and to his lustful vices.

In another extreme cult, the Children of God/the Family, women were used as a tool for recruiting new converts and friends (especially rich) through sexual services (flirty fishing) and considered particularly suitable for child-bearing, a mean for adding new disciples to the cult. They were also used for initiating children to sex and educating them in special environments, usually homes where the young ones were kept often far away from their parents.

Another extreme ideology is Satanism in which woman is idealised as a living altar for Satan and as a vessel that contains the wicked seed of the devil which is usually embodied by the leader of the group. Although these are extreme practices, we can’t be assured of respect and emancipation of women even in less extremist groups.

In New Age, a movement which includes many different cults and ideologies, women are often considered unable to use their intelligence or to choose their sexual life or to think by themselves. They are often seen as someone ready to try anything without criticism and believe everything without doubting. It is quite easy to find women in the golden world of new age or in anything  it is linked with it.

Modern women should be more careful to take possession again of their identity, their intellectual and physical value knowing that brave women have always existed and have helped to make the history of many countries. The old French saying “cherchez la femme” (look for the woman) means that to find the criminal one should go behind the woman for whom the crime has been committed. Nevertheless we think that the same can be said when we look for the wonderful role that women have had in many societies and in different historical periods.
